The Bowen Technique

‘A Straightforward, no-nonsense Remedial Therapy that is Non-Intrusive, Gentle and Very Effective.’

The Experience of a Bowen Technique Treatment is Gentle, Subtle and Relaxing, these are some of the main features that make The Bowen Technique so Unique. Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Sports Injury Therapists and Physiotherapists are among the many professional practitioners who use The Bowen Technique. (see Bowne Technique under the CAP Tab)

Where Did the Bowen Technique Originate?

Thomas Ambrose Bowen pioneered the Bowen Technique. Born in 1916 in Geelong, Australia. After working in miscellaneous labouring jobs as a young man, he developed a great interest in massage and bodywork and spent time observing football trainers and others involved with sports. By the time he was in his early 40’s, this gifted man had established a full time practice in remedial therapy using the technique he had developed. In 1978, when he was interviewed by a Parliamentary Committee looking into Complementary Medicine, he stated, under oath, that he treated about 280 patients per week with the help of an assistant and a receptionist- an incredible 13,000 patients a year, 88% of whom only required two or three treatments! Mr Bowen died in the early 1980’s but today there are a number of flourishing therapies based on his work.

What Does a Bowen Treatment Involve?

A Bowen Technique treatment will take approximately 45 minutes to one hour. The treatment can be performed through lightweight clothing or directly on the skin. We recommend that a course of two or three treatments, at weekly intervals, are often sufficient, although further treatments may sometimes be required. It is recommended that during a course of treatments other physical therapies such as osteopathy or chiropractic are not mixed with The Bowen Technique.

How is the Bowen Technique applied?

The Bowen Technique Practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points on the body to make rolling type moves that aim to work on the muscles, soft tissue and energy within the body. During the treatment there are periods in which the patient is left resting to allow the body to absorb the gentle moves that have been performed. This gives the body time to make the subtle and fine adjustments that help to relieve tension, reduce pain and initiate the healing process. The Bowen Technique encourages the body to realign itself; there is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used or needed. The Bowen Technique is not a form of Massage. The Bowen Technique is generally regarded as safe and effective for people of all ages.

The ASA accepts that the Bowen Technique could improve flexibility, in the short term, of hamstring muscles in healthy, fit adults aged 18 – 50 years with no muscular skeletal symptoms. Neither CAP nor the ASA has seen evidence that the technique can treat other conditions and advertisers should not refer to conditions for which medical supervision should be sought.

First Consultation will last approximately 1 hour to allow a thorough case history to be taken.

Following a Bowen Technique treatment you should rest for a minimum period of 30 minutes to an hour, you should drink plenty of water ideally 1.5 to 2 litres during the rest of the day following the treatment there may be some reddening of the skin, this is a perfectly normal reaction to increased blood flow in the skin, an increase in urination is also perfectly normal as the body is releasing toxins that require to be discharged this is a perfectly natural reaction to the increased blood in the skin.

The Bowen Technique is a complementary therapy and does not take the place of conventional medicine but is believed by many to ‘complement it’, should you have any concerns about receiving a Bowen Technique treatment you are advised to consult a approprietly ‘Qualified Medical Practitoner i.e. your GP’.
